KEEN SOCIAL × HARBOR BREEZE CRUISES
WHEN THE OCEAN ANSWEREDTURNING REAL-LIFE WHALE ENCOUNTERS INTO VIRAL STORYTELLING
How Keen Social is helping transform a legacy whale-watching company into a modern Southern California waterfront brand.
A CREATOR SANG TO THE OCEAN. A WHALE ANSWERED.
Keen Social turned the moment into momentum for Harbor Breeze’s next horizon.
THE CHALLENGE
A LEGACY BRAND AT A PIVOTAL MOMENT
Harbor Breeze had built decades of recognition as a Southern California whale-watching operator. But in an increasingly crowded tourism and attention landscape, legacy recognition alone was not enough.
At a pivotal moment for the business, the brand needed to reach new audiences, translate the experience aboard its vessels into a compelling digital story and build sustained visibility capable of supporting its sales benchmarks and long-term growth.
The opportunity was not to reinvent what made Harbor Breeze special. It was to make that value more visible, relevant and emotionally immediate to a new generation of guests.
THE EXPERIENCE WAS ALREADY EXTRAORDINARY. THE CHALLENGE WAS REVEALING IT. THE SOLUTION WAS BUILDING A PARTNERSHIP AND CONTENT SYSTEM CAPABLE OF CARRYING THAT STORY FURTHER.
NEXT — THE BREAKTHROUGH: THE MOMENT THAT COULD NOT BE SCRIPTEDThe Breakthrough
THE MOMENT THAT COULD NOT BE SCRIPTED
Then the ocean delivered the moment no campaign could manufacture.
Some marketing moments are planned. Others arrive without warning.
During a Harbor Breeze creator experience, musician Max Andre began singing toward the open ocean. Then, as if on cue, a whale breached beside the vessel.
It was spontaneous, emotional and impossible to manufacture—the kind of moment that reveals why people come aboard in the first place.
Keen recognized that this was more than a remarkable clip. It was the Harbor Breeze promise captured in a single scene: real people experiencing something extraordinary, together, on the water.

01UNPREDICTABLE.
02EMOTIONAL.
03AWE-INSPIRING.
04IMPOSSIBLE NOT TO SHARE.
But the strategy was never built around one creator or one extraordinary encounter.
Keen assembled a mix of entertainment, lifestyle, travel and food creators who could introduce Harbor Breeze through different audience perspectives.
Max Andre delivered the breakthrough cultural moment. The supporting creators made the experience feel accessible, relatable and worth planning.

AUTHENTICITY WAS THE CREATIVE STRATEGY
The strongest content did not ask creators to deliver a traditional tourism advertisement.
It gave them an experience worth reacting to.
Each creator brought their own perspective, voice and audience to Harbor Breeze—turning what could have been a standard promotional campaign into authentic, multi-angled discovery.

The breakthrough proved what was possible when authentic experience, creator storytelling and real-time opportunity came together. The next challenge was building a content engine capable of producing—and recognizing—more moments like it.
ONE EXTRAORDINARY MOMENT CAPTURED THE IMAGINATION. THE BROADER CONTENT SYSTEM BUILT THE MOMENTUM.

The System
BUILDING BEYOND THE BREAKTHROUGH
The breakthrough was not the entire strategy. It was proof that the strategy was working.
Behind it was a consistent content engine designed to capture the wildlife, atmosphere, people and unscripted emotion that make Harbor Breeze difficult to replicate. The Max Andre moment was extraordinary, but the strategy was never dependent on one viral post.
Whale watching is unpredictable by nature. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Weather changes. Seasons shift. Content production must fit within the realities of a working vessel and daily operations. Keen’s challenge was to build a strategy strong enough to perform whether the whales appeared or not—while remaining ready to capture extraordinary moments when they did.
Wildlife sightings could never be guaranteed
Content production had to coexist with daily operations
Seasonality shaped audience demand
The existing social presence undersold the real experience

The Method
BUILDING THE CONTENT ENGINE
The viral moment created attention. The content engine created consistency.
VIDEO-FIRST STORYTELLING
Vertical video became the primary format. Short, kinetic edits built around a single moment: the breach, the reaction, the approach into the harbor at golden hour. Captions carried the education. Sound carried the feeling.
EXPERIENCE-LED CONTENT
Every asset was built to answer one question: what does it feel like to be on that boat? The salt air, the announcement over the speaker, the moment two hundred people gasp at once.
REPEATABLE PRODUCTION
Consistency required a more repeatable approach. Keen developed a system that could help creators and crew capture content within the realities of an active operating day.

The objective was not simply to advertise a ticket. It was to create the desire to be there.
The Cadence
FROM BREAKTHROUGH MOMENTS TO AN ALWAYS-ON CADENCE
The strategy could not depend on waiting for the next viral whale encounter. Harbor Breeze needed an ongoing stream of content capable of making an ordinary sailing feel worth experiencing.
Everyday wildlife, boat atmosphere and onboard moments from regular sailings

The People
THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE EXPERIENCE
Captains, naturalists, crew members and guests gave Harbor Breeze a more recognizable human presence. Their expertise gave the content authority. Their personalities gave it warmth. Guest reactions captured the anticipation, excitement and shared experience of being on the water.

Collaboration
BUILT IN PARTNERSHIP
Keen has worked closely with Harbor Breeze’s internal leadership and marketing teams—including Kevin, Maria and Arto—to connect the company’s operational knowledge and business priorities with its evolving brand, content and communications strategy.
They know the water, the vessels, and the guest better than anyone. Our job is to translate that mastery into a brand language that scales.

The work began by strengthening how Harbor Breeze showed up online. As the brand gained momentum, the opportunity became larger: define what Harbor Breeze could become next.
The Pivot Point
HARBOR BREEZE AS THE HERO
The work began by strengthening how Harbor Breeze showed up through social content. As the partnership grew, so did the opportunity.
Keen is now helping create the foundation for Harbor Breeze’s next chapter: a more unified brand expression and a broader Southern California waterfront tourism and hospitality story.
Harbor Breeze remains the hero. New vessels, experiences and initiatives—including El Escudo—serve as proof points within that larger brand story.
This is an emerging direction and a foundation for future work. Keen’s role is expanding into public relations, paid social and a more connected communications ecosystem—newer capabilities that are still in their early stages and represent the next phase of the partnership, not results already achieved.

The Flagship of the Next Chapter
FROM WHALE WATCHING TO WATERFRONT HOSPITALITY
El Escudo, a premium 127-foot flagship vessel, expands what the brand can host: elevated charters, events, and waterfront hospitality at a scale the fleet has not offered before.
Keen has begun developing the strategic foundation for a broader communications approach that can use El Escudo to introduce a bigger Harbor Breeze story—one that includes whale watching, waterfront events, private celebrations, tourism partnerships and premium Southern California experiences.
El Escudo is not the entire brand transformation. It is evidence that the transformation is possible.
HARBOR BREEZE REMAINS THE HERO. EL ESCUDO BECOMES PROOF OF THE BRAND’S NEXT HORIZON.
The broader El Escudo communications strategy is still being developed and has not yet been fully activated.

Live Events & Entertainment
FROM CRUISES TO CELEBRATIONS
Private celebrations, live entertainment, and waterfront hospitality extend the brand past the whale-watching calendar — the same experience thinking, applied to an evening on the water.

The Next Phase
WHAT COMES NEXT
The next chapter is already taking shape.
Working alongside Harbor Breeze’s internal leadership and creative teams, Keen is helping develop a more connected ecosystem—one that can bring together internal content, external creators, brand storytelling, public relations and paid social around a shared direction.
The foundation is being built now. The next horizon is still ahead.
